Larry Niehues

French-born photographer Larry Niehues was raised in Avignon in the South of France, where he developed an early fascination with America and its history, culture, and mythology. His introduction to photography came through the fashion world, working with his brother Charles and his FBC Tailor & Supply clothing brand. What began as an informal role photographing the brand's work developed into a career spanning commercial, fashion, and fine art photography and ultimately led to his relocation to Los Angeles in 2010.

In 2013, Niehues began an extensive journey through all fifty states, photographing distinctly American subjects—from motorcycle culture and roadside motels to cowboy communities, small towns, and the people he encountered along the way. Working primarily with 35mm film, his travels became the foundation for Nothing Has Changed, his first monograph, published by Lannoo Publishers in 2019. The book sold through its first two print runs and received coverage from publications including The Guardian, W Magazine, and The Telegraph.

Nothing Has Changed features an introduction by Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys, who became an early supporter of Niehues's work and subsequently brought him into the band's orbit as its official tour photographer. The book's photographs have drawn comparisons to the work of American photographers including William Eggleston and Robert Frank, while reflecting Niehues's distinctly personal perspective on American life and culture.

Niehues's second monograph, Mississippi Dream, grew out of his travels through the Mississippi Delta during the making of Nothing Has Changed. Photographed over three years and multiple cross-country journeys during the COVID-19 pandemic, the project documents the people, landscapes, and culture of the Delta. Mississippi Dream received a pre-release presentation at Galerie XII in Los Angeles in February 2023, followed by official launches in Nashville in April 2023 and Paris in December 2023.

Niehues became a U.S. citizen in 2021 and now lives and works in Nashville, Tennessee, continuing his exploration of American life, culture, and the landscapes that have long inspired his work.
